Apsley A team continue winning ways
Our Apsley A team continued its winning ways with a 7-1 win at struggling David Lloyd on Saturday (14 June).
The night before the match we received a call from the opponents to say that they could only get 2 pairs out, but we still wanted to play (could probably have claimed the match), so we duly arrived at David Lloyd only needing 1 rubber win to win overall.
Our 2 pairs saw Helen Thorpe team up with Ed Blake, and the ‘more experienced’ pair of Judy Slaney and Mike Johnson, on the outside courts at David Lloyd in some pretty decent temperatures.
So just one win required, an easy task was it - no! Helen and Ed won their first set 6/3, but then lost the second to the same score before finding that extra gear to run through their 3rd set 6/2. On the adjacent court, a similar pattern was being followed with Judy/Mike winning their first set 6/1, but losing the second 6/3. This match then went all the way to a 3rd set tie break with Judy/Mike winning 11/9, saving 3 match points in the process
So with the match won, our ladies played some excellent doubles, only losing 1 game in their match but unfortunately the men came up a little short losing 6/4 6/4 despite Ed’s heroics.
Well played all.
