Men's 'D' team dive into league Tennis...
The long awaited debut of our newly formed Men’s D team started with a big splash on Sunday.
Arriving at the club after heavy rain, we were greeted with court 1 looking more like a duck pond.
Not to be deterred we changed out of our flippers and were able to use court 7 instead. Our team uniquely had 2 father and son teams, with the youngsters keen to show ‘the old men up’
So round 1 saw Nigel Dyer and Ian Chrisham (pictured below and no not father and son) started with a reasonably comfortable match against South Hant’s no 1 pair 6-1 7-5.
Next up saw (Dad) Russell and Sam Taylor have a really tough match against the number 2’s with some excellent scampering and retrieving. But despite their best efforts , the Winchester family pair went down 6-2 6-4
Last up saw Cain and Mike Johnson eventually get through their match, after winning the first set 6-3, they kept taking the lead in the second, but just couldn’t stay ahead. They then got themselves into a strong position in the tie break being 5-0 up and then 6-2 before eventually prevailing 12-10! An important result that put the team, 2-1 up.
Second round saw Cain and Mike winning comfortably against the no 1’s 6-0 6-3. Ian and Nigel then pulled off a stunning comback against the opposing No 2’s after losing the first set 6-3, they snuck the second 6-4 with some excellent ‘pumped-up’ tennis from both of them. Last match saw young Sam continue his excellent scampering and retriving as his Dad shouted instructions, and they also ‘halved’ their match, a great result against crafty opponents, especially the ‘lefty’ with a very effective serve.
So 4-2 up and only 1 set to draw and 2 sets required to win the match……we did make it difficult, Ian and Nigel swapped their score from the previous match winning 6-4 but then losing 6-3, so match drawn at worst. Russell and Sam won their first set 6-4 (so match won overall), but then their opponents found their range winning that 6-2. Cain and Mike, confident of another win after winning their first 2 matches got completely blown away 6-1 in the first set, but held their nerve to get to 5-1 up in the second set, but then gave their opponents some false hope by letting them claw themselves back to 5-4, before serving it out for the draw.
So overall a 5½ - 3½ victory first time out to the D team. Well played all, next match is unfortunately only next year, but the standard has been set!
Mike Johnson (Captain)
