TENNIS - Mens D get promoted in their first year....

Men’s D gain promotion in their first year

Russell and Sam Taylor

A massive congratulations to the Men’s D team who have gained promotion to Division 5 with a match to spare

Sunday saw us pitted against David Lloyd in the “biggest match of the season” as both teams were undefeated and the winners guaranteed promotion….

Cain Johnson and Adam Espir

Lining up on a bitterly cold, but sunny morning, the 2 teams took to the lightly frosted courts. What became quite obvious was that their no1 pair were pretty useful, and in truth weren’t troubled that much during the day. They soon saw off our no1 pair for the day Cain Johnson and Adam Espir 6/1 6/3. Our No 2 pair Ian Younger and Greg Ardling made light work of their no2 pair 6/2 6/3 and then after a big tussle and some tremendous power hitting from young Sam Taylor, he and his Dad Russ, overcame their opponents 6/4 6/3.

Greg Arding and Ian Younger

2-1 up after the first round, looking good, but still some nerves around……It was Ian/Greg’s turn to play the no1’s and unfortunately they came a rapid second losing 6/1 6/1, but to settle our nerves Sam/Russ won theirs 6/2 6/3, and over on court 1, Cain/Adam after winning the 1st set 6/2 allowed their opponents back in and held them off in a tiebreak so 4-2 up in aggregate.

Last round and just 1 set to draw, 2 sets for the win. Cain and Adam got the message and raced through their match 6/1 6/1 with young Cain serving very well, and hitting some great ground shots. Over on court 3, Sam took the match to their no1’s and although he and Russ lost it was a great match 6/1 6/4. On court 1, our nerves had been racing early on as Ian/Greg lost their first set, before winning the second 6/2 to halve the match.

Overall a satisfying 5½ - 3½ win, well played to all involved with the D team, and with 1 match to go, a win will guarantee the league title first time out!!

Mike Johnson (Captain)
