Matt Adds The Gloss
Winchester's Sigvaris-sponsored fifth team put themselves right back into the hunt for the Hampshire Division 2 title with a thrilling 4-1 win at home to fellow promotion hopefuls Totton III.
Arjun Takhar got Winchester off to the best possible start playing some clinical squash to overcome Dan Swanson in four games, but the match was soon back in the balance as Tim Cooling was unable to come to terms with the excellent court coverage of Bradley Pletts who must surely be hopeful of promotion up the Totton order before too long.
Jon Sampson then stepped gingerly onto court knowing he would be in a tough encounter with the persistent Paul Atkinson and so it proved. The two players engaged in a ding-dong battle which swung first one way and then the other, Sampson eventually emerging triumphant 9-7 in the fifth game after fully 75 minutes of attritional but sportingly contested squash.
It appeared victory was slipping away from Winchester with George Kousseff and Matt Aldridge (pictured) both trailing to Ross Shadick-Coe and Neil Ayton respectively. But first Kousseff fought back to claim an unlikely win by the narrowest of margins, 9-8 in the fifth, and then Aldridge astonishingly recovered from 0-7 down to clinch his fifth game 9-7 amid a blitz of flashing winners and so seal a crucial victory for the Bereweeke Road side.
