Winchester's Sigvaris-sponsored 7th team stayed on course for back-to-back promotions with a convincing 4-1 victory over local rivals Trojans V in Division 5 of the Hampshire League.
Youngster Sam Welch, making his league debut in place of his dad Nick, found the going tough against the more experienced Simon Parnham but put up a valiant fight before going down in straight games. Skipper Jonathan Fox soon restored the balance however, recovering from a tentative start to overcome Tom Nicholls in four games.
The rapidly improving Pete Glyn-Jones then proved too fast and strong for David Vyvyan, justifying his recent move up the rankings with a comfortable 3-0 to put the home side ahead. Meanwhile Simon Geary and Muhammad Nasir were in a see-saw battle on the adjoining court, Geary playing some excellent squash to go 2-1 up only for Nasir to peg him back to 2-2. But Geary has been working hard on his fitness and was not to be denied, stepping up the pace again to take the deciding game 9-5 and put the Bereweeke Road side into an unassailable lead.
Olley Harrison at no.1 has also come on in leaps and bounds this season. After a rush to get to the game having just come off a 13 hour shift and with the adrenalin still coursing round his veins, he took apart Trojans veteran Mike Quigley for a miserly three points, taking his personal tally for the season to 12 wins from 14 matches and bringing the prospect of that double promotion tantalisingly within reach.
