Winchester Vets Battle It Out
Winchester's Sigvaris sponsored first and second Vets teams battled it out in the Hampshire Premier Division this week, with the first team duly justifying their ranking positions with a convincing 3-0 victory.
Craig Mascall was first on court for the first team, up against Hampshire Ladies captain Bev Mackay. Both players were somewhat in recovery mode, Mascall from a niggling back injury and Mackay from an extended mid season break, but after a tentative start from both players Mascall it was who stepped up the pace to run out a comfortable winner 9-3, 9-4, 9-4.
In the second string match, George Kousseff (pictured) limbered up nicely for the defence of his Hampshire Over 45 title later this month, overcoming Trevor Leahy in straight games, although not without an early scare as the Club Chairman reeled off seven points in a row in the first game with a stunning series of volleyed winners.
British Over 45 finalist Jon Foster then turned on the style against Patrick Fisher, cruising to victory for the loss of just three points despite some gritty retrieving from the second team skipper.
So maximum points for the first team as they seek to retain their Veterans' championship, but a gutsy performance also by the second team who remain just above the relegation zone in their first season in the top flight with several critical matches to come in the weeks ahead.
