The Men's B Hants and IOW team took a big step towards guaranteeing survival in Division 1 with a hard fought victory away at Warsash. After two rounds of matches the tie was delicately balanced at 3 rubbers all. The team went into the final round knowing that a defeat would leave relegation as a likely prospect, whilst a win would put survival within touching distance. Cue a motivational team talk from stand-in captain Jon Clift demanding one final push from the team. The team responded in emphatic style in the final three rubbers.
Stuart Levy and Daniel Cole were first over the line with a fine two set victory to give Winchester a 4-3 lead. With just one more rubber required there was not long to wait until Jon Clift and Ed Blake rounded off a strong afternoon's work by taking their third rubber of the day against Warsash's top pair. And a fine 6-3 win was secured as new pairing of Austin Gwilliam and Simon Richards finished with a straight sets win.
The victory moves the B team to two wins and two defeats from their first four matches. The fifth and final game of their season is a morning match at home to Hampshire Club A on Saturday 25th July.
