Despite the generally awful conditions, this winter has been a brilliantly successful one for the men’s teams at Winchester.
The Men’s A, B and C teams took the honours in Divisions 1 2 and 3 of the Southampton LTA winter league so will have two teams competing in the top division next winter. These results reflect the strength in depth of the tennis at Winchester, which has been boosted by the addition of so many new members, many of them attracted by the under 35’s marketing strategy.
In the Basingstoke league there are still a number of fixtures to be played, with our team currently holding a solid third place in their division, having had some ups and downs over the recent months.
We have also had a very good winter season in the Sarum League which includes mixed doubles. The A team has retained the top division title after a tight season, securing a home draw in the final match in terrible conditions against Riverside, which was just enough to secure the championship.
The Sarum B team have also done well to come second in their division, just missing the playoffs, this is Adrian Girling’s last season as Captain of the Sarum B team, as John Dymot steps up to take the strain next winter. Thanks are due to Adrian for his efforts over a number of years running this team.
A big “thank you” is due to the Captains of all these teams who have organised and occasionally agonised over raising a team and travelled all over Hampshire (and Wiltshire) this winter to such good effect.
The focus now swings to the summer season, which starts with Apsley League fixtures in April, the first match being the local derby between our A team and B team. Please also note that the draws for the club tournament are being filled now, with the men’s singles being divided into three groups in order to appeal to as many members as possible. Details are available at reception and via the web site.
