Winchester Men’s A 9 : Lyndhurst 0
Debutant Ed Blake (L) with Paul England
The excellent start to the Men’s A Southampton League winter campaign continued last Sunday with a solid drubbing of Lyndhurst.
The Men’s A team fielded 2 dnew players who both excelled. Ed Blake, making his debut, teamed up with veteran Paul England and ended up as ‘best pair’ on the day, only losing 6 games in their matches. Next up was Jonathan Clift, our second player making his debut who played with Mike Johnson, the third pair were the seasoned pair of Carl Richardson and Patrick Warburton
The match started on a crisp morning with the news that Lyndhurst could unfortunately only field 2 pairs, meaning Winchester were up 3-0 before the first tennis ball was hit!
L to R - Carl Richardson Patrick Warburton Jonathan Clift
Carl/Patrick opened up against the visitors 1st pair, while Jonathan/Mike played their 2nd pair and Ed/Paul enjoyed a coffee! Both Winchester pairs battled in their first sets, both coming from a break down to win their sets 7-5. Second sets much more straight forward with Patrick/Carl only dropping 1 game.
Going into the second round, we were already 5-0 up, Paul England commented that it was the first time he’d ever started a league match where we’d already won before he started! Ed showed the way with Paul comfortably beating the visitors no 1 pair 6-0/6-2.
The team eased through the last round of matches with some interesting encouragement coming from Carl for his partner, and Patrick responding with some interesting volleying.
