Tim Weir bows out with a win...
The Men’s A team wrapped up the Southampton Winter Premier league title yesterday, with another convincing win, 7-2 over Warsash
Tim Weir (Right), playing his last match for the club before heading back to his native Scotland, starred with Miles McDowall (2nd Left), with the pair winning all 3 of their matches with relative ease.
The match was played in extremely windy conditions, making for some very interesting shots especially serving and smashes.
The match kicked off with Tim/Miles comfortably beating the opposition 3rd pair, our 2nd pair (Stu Levy - Left, and Carl Richardson – holding racket), beating the opposition 2nd pair 7-6 7-6 with no breaks of serve in a long match. Our 3rd pair Jonathan Clift (3rd left), and Mike Johnson (2nd Right), managed to beat the opposition 1st pair on court 7, the windiest court 6-2, 7-5.
So 3-0 up after the first round, Tim/Miles continued in their dominant way, although were pushed in the second set against the Warsash 1’s winning 6-1, 7-6. Stu/Carl beating the no 3’s 3/4 and Jonathan/Mike halving with the no 2’s, after winning the first set 6-4.
So the match was won at 5½ - ½ heading into the last round, Tim/Miles made light work of the no 2’s 2/1, Stu/Carl unfortunately lost to the no 1’s 2/6 and last match saw Jonathan/Mike halving again, this time coming back and winning the second set after losing the first.
Overall, despite the wind a great win, wrapping up the league with the astonishing statistic of matches for 40.5 against 4.5
A huge thanks to all the players that played this season, as winners we will now play Warsash again for the Solent cup (as they won the Portsmouth league) during April, and the very best of luck to Tim as he heads up to Scotland.
