The Men's B team made a successful start to their Hants and IOW doubles league campaign with two wins in the space of a week. The team, eying promotion to Division 1, started with two away fixtures, against Avenue A and Totton A.
The Avenue match was the first time the Avenue grass courts had been used this year - some of the best grass courts in the region. And the result lived up the occasion, the team of Ben Jepson, Oli Rowson, Mike Johnson, Duncan Trew, Tim Healy and Patrick Warburton scoring an 8-1 win. The score line was helped by the withdrawal of one of Avenue's stronger players during the second round of rubbers. That left Mike and Patrick with a relaxing afternoon of sunbathing as Ben and Oli toiled through 6 gruelling sets, delivering 3 rubbers.
From a beautiful sunny day on immaculate grass courts, to Totton. The second match was a played on a damp windy morning against the newly promoted Totton A - Mike and Patrick were joined by Carl Richardson, Tal Russ, Jon Clift and Ed Blake. All three pairs had relatively comfortable wins against Totton's second and third pairs. Totton's first pair provided stronger opposition scraping through two out of three tight rubbers. Carl and Tal took the bragging rights, beating the Totton first pair in a match tiebreak, despite Carl being 'accidently' hit in the face by smash from an unnamed team-mate mid way through his service action. Oops. A great 7-2 win to make it two wins from two matches.
Well done to all who have played so far, some big matches to come.
