Defending champions kick-off Apsley in style
The (summer) Apsley mixed league kicked off on Saturday with the much anticipated Winchester A v Winchester B match, following the B’s promotion back to the Premier league last September.
Greeted by bright sunshine, and more wind than we’d have liked, the teams took to the courts, delayed slightly as Kevin Harris the B captain fired up his team with some inspirational words.
Court 1 saw the no 1 pairs face each other. The A’s represented by the youngsters of Austin Gwillam and Freya Davies, took on the ‘more experienced’ B pairing of Mark Swinscoe and Monica Finlayson. The youngsters got off to a flyer only losing 1 game in the first set, but the experienced B’s made them fight harder in the 2nd set, but Austin and Freya prevailed 6-3. Court 2 saw Ben Jepson and late stand in Judy Aimes take on Andy Cobb and Lorraine Cole with the A’s prevailing with the same score as on court 1.
Third up was Mike Johnson and Nicki Thornton who made light work of Dave Wykes and Nicky Davies only losing 1 game, and last by no means least saw Helen Thorpe make her A debut, playing with her ‘better half’ Ed Blake, who took on Kevin Harris and Jen Campbell-Wilson. Keen to impress Helen and Ed only lost 2 games in dispatching the B pairing
So could Kevin rally his troops for the doubles…..unfortunately not, as Freya/Judy beat Monica/Lorraine just losing 1 game and Nicki/Helen beat Nicky/Jen also only losing just the 1 game.
On the men’s courts, Austin/Ben beat Mark/Dave 6-2, 6-0, and over on court 6, Mike/Ed beat Kevin/Andy 6-0, 6-1
A lovely day to kick-off the summer season, with the A showing they will be contenders to retain their title again this year, well played to both teams.
