Well Done Winchester Mens B team...
Men’s ‘B’ team have very nearly completed their season just 2 months after they started it, and have done so in some style beating Riverside ‘A’ team 7.5-1.5, our 3rd match in so many weeks. The team have won all 5 matches played and are now guaranteed a return to Division 1, with the final match against Hedge End in February.
Riverside had the Wiltshire U18 County Closed doubles champion, Michael Barry, playing at 1st pair with Nick Stamp, but despite this could only halve against all the Winchester pairs. Our pairs were Patrick Warburton/George Barfoot, Mark Swinscoe/Dave Wykes, and Gareth Birdsall/Ian Farrand. For Gareth this was his debut for the B team, and along with Ian Farrand started the match against the Riverside 1st pair. With the low sun and the booming serves from Michael Barry it was a tough debut, but despite losing the first set held their nerve to break them twice to win the second. Mark/Dave and George/Patrick beat the 2nd and 3rd pairs comfortably in the 1st round. Same pattern continued in the rest of the match with Patrick/George and Mark/Dave halving against the 1st pair but winning the remainder, Mark/Dave very nearly won all 3 points only narrowly losing the 1st set in a tie break against the 1st pair.
After Winchester narrowly won 5-4 against Totton & Eling on the 29th September we have won the remainder at a gallop, beating Salisbury ‘B’ 7.5-1.5 (20 Oct), Bassett ‘B’ 8.5-0.5 (17 Nov), and Bassett ‘A’ 7.5-1.5 (24 Nov). Thanks to all who have played so far, special mention though to Mark Swinscoe who has played every single match and Dave Wykes who was left out of only one match through injury even though he was willing to play through it.
We now look forward to playing the ‘A’ team next season!
