Our Apsley A team won the league with a resounding 8-0 drubbing of the Hampshire Club on Saturday. Both teams started the match undefeated with the winner claiming the league title as their prize.
The Winchester team of Josh Girling/Hannah Crawford, Charlie Dryden/Charlie Ames, Karl Grossey/Lauren Evans and Miles McDowell/Freya Davies started off the mixed matches against a strong Hampshire Club team in slightly overcast conditions. McDowell/Davies wrapped up a straight sets win, quickly followed by Dryden/Ames. The remaining 2 mixed both went the distance with Girling/Crawford scraping through a tiebreaker and Grossey/Evans winning their 3rd set 6-4.
So 4-0 up at the break before the ladies and men’s doubles started. The weather held, but the squash tournament BBQ did get rather smoky at times, not enough to disrupt play as Girling/Dryden wasted no time winning their match in straight sets 6/2 6/4, thereby securing the title for Winchester. McDowell/Grossey fought back to win the second set after losing the first for their opponents to have to concede due to an injury. The ladies also made light work of their opponents winning their 2 matches in straight sets, sealing a resounding 8-0 victory. Revenge duly served after Winchester lost the league title in the corresponding match last year.
A big thank you to all the players that played in the A matches during the year.
