Men’s A win Southampton Winter Premier League
Our Men’s A team under new Captain Jon Clift won the Winter Premier league again on Sunday with a comfortable 6/3 victory away to Salisbury.
Arriving on a sunny but blustery morning, we took to damp hard courts with the challenging (light) Penn balls that Salisbury use. We soon realised that it would be hard work mastering the conditions.
Our first pair of Josh Girling (who must get special mention for playing despite being unwell) and Stu Levy made light work of their 3rd pair, not dropping a game. Our Seconds Ben Jepson/Mike Johnson in truth made a meal of their match against their second pair, winning the first set 7/5 but then squandering 4 match points before halving when losing the second set breaker (11-9). Our third pair of the day Ed Blake/Duncan Trew lost 6/0 6/4 to the Salisbury firsts
So 1 ½ : 1 ½ after the first round, Josh/Stu again made light work of their match. Beating the home firsts 6/1 6/3, Ben and Mike beat the thirds also without dropping a game, before Ed/Duncan halved theirs, another match like Ben/Mike that we should have won?
Now the overall position looked better with Winchester 3 ½ : 2 ½ ahead. Ed/Duncan made light work of their match, and with Ben/Mike a set up as were Josh/Stu, Josh decided enough was enough and retired, leaving Ben/Mike to squander their last set in what was a dead rubber
Overall 6/3 was a satisfying result, and by the end the sun was out, the wind had stopped and it was ideal tennis conditions (except for the light balls)….
Thanks to all the chaps involved in the team this year, we were undefeated (again), and can now look forward to the Solent Cup where we will play the winner of the Portsmouth league on 18 April – watch this space for more information as it should be great tennis for this highly prestigious trophy.
Thankfully the Solent Cup will be played at home this year and not Warsash, else Stu might never get there
