The men’s C team entertained Hedge End on Saturday and the match proved to be entertaining throughout. The team of Dan Cole Joe Beal; Gareth Birdsall Mark Finlayson and Kevin Harris Mark Swinscoe got off to a flying start winning the first set on each court, Mark and Gareth at 2nd pair then suffered the ignominy of scrapping to avoid the dreaded “bagel” in the second set and lost the match tie-break with the opponents bringing out a string of unlikely winners. Nevertheless the first round ended 2 – 1 to Winchester.
The same result in the second round meant a 4 -2 advantage, close but no cigars yet.
The third round contest between our top pair (Dan and Joe) and the Hedge end 2’s proved particularly tasty, with one very entertaining 4 way altercation at the net stopping play on the other courts, and some high quality tennis throughout. Again the Hedge end pair got home on the match tie break, so now we had only a 4 – 3 advantage.
The match went right down to the last few moments, as both the remaining matches went long. Eventually Kevin and Mark overcame the Hedge End third pair and Gareth / Mark F got home against the first. There was a bit of a scare in this last rubber, with Mark and Gareth 6-0, 3-0, 40-0 in the second set and discussing the chance of a “Golden Set”, of course this hubris had the inevitable result with the loss of 5 of the next 6 games, followed by a recovery to make it into a tense but successful tie break.
Final result 6-3
