SQUASH - 5th win in five for Mens first team

Great Win for Adam on Eve of Nationals

Winchester Men's first team made it five wins out of five in the Hampshire Premier Division with a narrow 3-2 win at home to Chichester.

The match appeared finely balanced when Winchester's Stefan Stanton lost in straight games to Lewis Strudwick, whilst on the adjoining court Phill Bull quickly restored parity with a 3-0 win over Mike Jordan despite struggling with a bad back.

Club coach Gary Hinton then continued on the recovery trail after almost three years out with a serious knee injury, fighting back from dropping the first game against Simon Randell to take the next three games in some style and put the Bereweeke Road team ahead.

So the stage was set for the key game between Winchester's England U17 no.2 Adam Corcoran (pictured) and O45 International Steve McLoughlin. Both players can run forever and McLoughlin is rarely outmanoeuvred on court, but once again Corcoran demonstrated that there is seemingly nothing he cannot reach and return with interest to run out the winner 11-7 11-6 11-8 and so clinch overall victory for his side. This was the perfect warm up for Corcoran before he heads off to Manchester to compete in this week's National Junior Championships.

With both University of Winchester student Rob Downer and his opponent Nathan Lake ranked in the national Top 30, the match between the no.1s was eagerly awaited. But Downer was just unable to match Lake's speed around court and, despite finding some stunning winning shots, found himself on the wrong side of 3-0 scoreline.

Nonetheless a crucial win for Winchester which keeps them at the top of the Premier table and sets things up nicely for their next home fixture - against Lee-on-Solent, the only other unbeaten side in the league.
