Last Saturday our Apsley A team travelled to Warsash, traditionally our closest rivals for the final match of the season. The league tables had been updated just before the match confirming that we’d actually won the league with a match to spare, but with pride on the line, this team were going for glory.
Warsash put out a very strong team, hoping victory for them would secure them 2nd place in the league, so all was set for an interesting match.
Starting with the mixed, our no 1 pair Ed Blake and Helen Thorpe came through against their no 1’s in a high standard match 6/4 6/3. Court 2 didn’t go so well, with Simon Richards and Claire Coomer losing 6/2 6/2, then court 3 was the marathon match Duncan Trew and Liz Davies eventually losing in well over 2 hours 6/4 3/6 2/6. Court 4 was a straight forward win for Mike Johnson and Judy Slaney, losing just 3 games.
So 2-2 going into the men’s and ladies, where we had some very close matches. The men’s 1 pair started early due to the elongated 3rd mixed match and we were treated to a brilliant first set played by Ed and Simon who won it 6/1, unfortunately it slipped away from there and they lost the next 2 sets 7/6 and then 6/2. Our second men’s pair of Duncan and Mike started slowly losing the first set 6/4, but after winning the second 6/1 their opponents withdrew due to an injury. So 3-3 after the men’s, what could the ladies do….well very well of course. Liz and Judy (2nd pair) won 6/3 6/1 in a match which took as long as Helen and Claire’s 7/6 6/4 victory, so overall a hard-fought 5-3 victory to Winchester A, our 4th title in a row.
Well played team, thanks to everybody who played this season, thanks to Claire for running the ladies side, and good luck to Ed who’s taking over as captain next year (no pressure with 4 in a row Ed!)
