The Men’s C team played their 3rd match of the winter on 24th Jan. Having lost heavily to our own B team (clearly a strategic loss?) and closely to Kingsgate it was time to stiffen the sinews and get a result. The team for the 24th was a classic mix of youth and experience with the addition of Noah Davies and Nick Tsangaris from the junior ranks bringing the youthful exuberance to add to the gnarly experience of Jon Russell and Marc Dryden coupled with the always reliable Kevin Harris and Ian Farrand.
Our opponents – Totton and Eling’s 1st team are always a tough team to beat so we gave Noah and Nick the job of sorting out their number one pair in the first set of rubbers. Things did not quite go to plan and they lost the first set, but came back well to take the second for a half after a brief chat with the captain. Kevin and Ian meanwhile had a huge struggle in the first set against the number two’s finally winning a tie break after being down and out mid way through the set. They cruised the second set for a point. Meanwhile the veteran duo of Marc and Jon made short work of the third pair. So having stared down the barrels we were now looking better at 2.5 points to a half for Totton.
In the second round, Noah and Nick again halved their match against an unconventional pair, Jon and Marc “had a tactical rest” against the 1st pair and Kevin / Ian went through the full range of emotions to beat the 3rd pair 7-6; 7-5.
So going into round three we needed one more point to prevail. This was duly delivered by Jon and Marc, cruising home against the 2nd pair after their rest. Noah and Nick added a solid point against the third pair and Kevin / Ian battled through to gild the result with a half against the first pair.
6.5 to 2.5 well done everyone!
