NAIL-BITING WIN FOR WINCHESTER IN SEMI-FINAL VERSUS THE NORTHERN, MANCHESTER... GAME COUNT OF 33 TO 31!

Winchester has reached the final for the third year running after a cliffhanger against The Northern. Playing away on indoor acrylic, very much not our favourite surface, Winchester faced stiff opposition in a team which included national level players and a European Squash champion! Our hopes rested on a recent rule change to a doubles only event slightly favouring our established pairings.

Peter Friedmann and David Trew were unable to establish their customary rhythm against the quality play of their first pair, leaving it up to Brian Birch and Richard Lovell to serve up a solid victory against their second. Equal on sets and rubbers we trailed by just one game after the first round!

The second round went down to the wire, full of palpable tension and racket throwing incidents! Brian and Richard scored some vital early games in their match, while Peter and David contrived a second set bagel win, resulting in an astonishing victory by two games!

Well done team!

The Finals take place in Dudley at 11am Friday 18th November and are a doubles only event. We are due to play either Harpenden or Streetly.
